Day 1

Keynote from former Traffic Commissioner Beverley Bell - Attracting Talent, “it’s a profession”

Former traffic commissioner, Beverley Bell kicked off the Multimodal seminars with a lively look at the challenge of attracting new talent into the logistics profession. "It’s a profession not ‘just an industry" she stressed.

Steve Granite from Abbey Logistics shared his own remarkable journey from apprentice to MD and talked about his visits to schools as part of Think Logistics. Experiences from those in the room showed that ‘logistics’ is still seen as ‘trucks and sheds’ and not a career for the brightest and best – which we all know it is; with the advent of ‘big data’ as the driving force in manufacturing and retailing.

The session ended with a wake-up call to the sector to make use of the apprenticeship levy money being taken from the larger companies – current data shows that government has taken £85m from the sector and yet only £4m has been spent on apprenticeships.
