 Freight forwarders turned out in force for Heathrow LSA workshop, large and small from across the country they arrived at Logistics Skills Alliance, West Thames College to discuss a joined-up approach on raising awareness of freight forwarding apprenticeships for the next generation workforce.

James Billingham for LSA provided Freight Forwarders with a Top 3 Tip plan for employers to get the best return on their Apprenticeship investment.

 

1. Have a clear plan

-Identify business ‘Pinch Points’ – How can Apprenticeships support?

-Up-skilling Existing or Recruitment of new? Succession Planning

-Company ‘buy in’ of plan and clear on who ‘Owns it’ – Build in

-Check / Review points / aligned to wider People plan

-Communication / Clarity / Celebrate

 

2. Do your homework

-Relevant Apprenticeships and at what level

-Understand ‘ Basic Rules’ & Flexibilities – ‘ Off the job training’ -

-Apprenticeship System / End-Point Assessment

-Review current training & Fill in the Gaps

-Apprenticeships right for your business? – Job roles / Levels

 

3. Select the right training provider

-A provider who is on same page with capability and capacity

-Work together to ‘build’ the programme - Integrated approach to developing the delivery model Progression Pathways

-True Partnership – the Logistics Skills Alliance as an extension of your business

 

The LSA is one of only 3 providers nationally to have supported the IFA employer group for Freight Forwarding in the development and promotion of the new Level 3 Freight Forwarding Apprenticeship Standard. The end-point assessment is presently in edit review and could be available very soon.

 

Carl Hobbis from BIFA was guest key note speaker, he reinforced the need for freight forwarding as a sector of choice to attract, recruit and retain a next generation workforce. BIFA showcased their new toolkit to support members in recruiting apprenticeships.

 

CH Robinson, Geodis, Brinks Global, All Port Cargo, Panalpina, Toll Group , LF Logistics , UK ligentia , Oia Global , DHL , DB Schenke and Metro Shipping were some of those in attendance and contributed to a lively debate on their apprenticeship priorities and challenges.
